“Japanese Photography of the 30’s : Surrealism and Avant-Garde Photography”
In this article I establish the foundation of the Japanese Avant-Garde Photography movement. Despite being similar to Western surrealism, this movement is not merely a Japanese copy. The article illustrates the movement’s distinct qualities by explaining its historical and geographical evolution. It also introduces the work of the influential theoretician Takiguchi Shûzô and the work of some of the movement’s major photographers which include Nakayama Iwata, Koishi Kiyoshi, Hanawa Gingo, and Ei-Kyu.
